At some point in this, Gluey needs to finish Grohn's adventure on land.
At this point, Rowen and Lerris are beginning their journey to Edoras, where they hope to find Byron. Rowen and Lerris have just been established as together. The journey will take three days. In those days, a lot of talking goes on. There's a bit of background to make up in this segment. One, I know Rowen still brings up the conversation on the boat, where she asks Lerris to mourn his losses and recover it. I know the cause of Fain's death is revealed (he participated in the war of the ring because he wanted to fight, and Lerris was not of the same mind). I specifically recall Rowen asking how old Lerris was (his reply ‘older than you’). I know we find out about Lerris' family (his father had died protecting a woman, and his mother had moved on to another mate). In that, we learn Lerris had not seen his mother for thirty years. Lerris talks about his mother for a bit, musing that she would love Rowen--then taking it back, giving note to similarities in temperament. I also recall Rowen occasionally asking Lerris to sing something to her. He’d usually begin, then stop short, telling her how hard it was singing with a vanima (beautiful woman)’s arm around him (he does say the sweetest things). Throughout the journey, Lerris occasionally checks out the tender spot after his fall. At some point, I know Rowen brings up what was said on the boat again, about mourning one's loss. Lerris reacts hostilely for awhile, but she eventually wins her argument.
At one point, they come upon a farm, of sorts, where they keep horses. Rowen helps Lerris break in, and they steal a horse to make the journey go faster. This isn’t Paynim, he came in A Question Of Faith. At some point, Lerris mentioned something about Bounty Hunters, as foreshadowing.
By the time they get to Edoras, it’s three days later and raining. Rowen is despondent (I can’t remember the trigger, they probably were talking about Byron before, and she probably got depressed.) They find an Inn, and Lerris secures them a room. He tosses her a coin to get something to eat while he goes to bed, but she throws it back in favor of looking for Byron. In her search, she fails to find him. She gets drunk and eventually makes it back to their room where she goes to sleep. Lerris wakes up first, and goes downstairs to eat. She follows soon after, and tells him about the failure of her search. He tells her that she deserves nothing less than a quiet life, and should forget about Byron. Lerris is, as it happens, hostile about Byron, considering what he had done to her, and considers him undeserving. I don't recall him saying this, but thinking it. She gets angry and storms out. He goes somewhere to meditate and she goes somewhere to get drunk. In the end, they meet back at the front of Inn. I think he didn’t seem much to want to talk to her, going in, but she stops him so that she can explain herself. Once she’s done, she tells him he can go. He tells her something to the effect of “Anyone who leaves after the first fight is a coward; you’re beautiful, don’t hide it behind a mug of ale” (again, he does say pretty darn sweet things). At some point in this, he tells her he didn’t mean he should forget about Byron (can’t remember where). Here, he might have told what happened to Fain--the war because Fain wanted to fight, but Lerris said he didn't know what the war was (I think we know it was the War of the Ring). They go in, and he orders duck. They start to eat, and get to talking on a completely different subject. Rowen asks 'how old do you elves live anyway?', and he replies essentially forever unless killed or of disease. I think he starts thinking about age, and how he’d long outlive Rowen. He says something, but Rowen misreads the comment and asks him if he’s sensitive about his age.
At some point, they notice a person eyeing Rowen--a person they assume to be a bounty hunter. They both slip out without a fight. Somewhere in all of this, probably the first night camping out, Lerris suggests going to Mirkwood, where he has friends who can help her map out how to find Byron. He tells her, if she likes, they will never stop looking. She agrees. They travel in that direction, at some point just outside Fangorn (as you mentioned). At some point in their travels, they cross a river (I recall both of them getting very wet). When Lerris makes it back home, he lets the horse go.
Now, sometime around here, Byron is traveling, and comes about Lerris’ house, which he finds suitable for his needs. He is sleeping there, wakes up, and goes out. Rowen and Lerris go in, not knowing that Byron is watching them from the window. When he sees them kiss, he comes in and beats up Lerris. At some point, Lerris is released, and Rowen and Byron get to arguing. Somewhere in this, it is revealed that Byron knows elvish. Byron refuses to stay with Rowen with Lerris there. Lerris goes out to take care of unfinished business (which is not mentioned until A Question Of Faith--it was Lerris mourning/telling the other elves what happened to Abbot), and Rowen stops him and tells him she loves him. He responds in like (“I will always love you”, if I recall right), and leaves. Rowen and Byron have their final say and leave.
