Lerris is writing his book about Byron. It has been two years since he’s seen Rowen. He told the other elves about what really happened to Master Abbot. Some were able to forgive him, others threw him out of their homes. While he’s writing, a kid comes by his door. The kid tells him someone is coming to hurt him. Lerris thanks the child, packs up his book, food, and his staff, and leaves.
-Meanwhile-
Rowen is with Byron, passing by the place where, a few miles off, she knows Lerris is living. She is depressed, tempted to find him, but afraid she will lose Byron if she goes. He has met and surpassed her strength, and there is nothing left to tie him to her, so she has to hold onto him. They walk on without either acknowledging where they are.
-Later-
Vyrax breaks down the door to Lerris’ house. He’s gone, but the ones that hired him are there. They ask for the staff when the job is done, and agree to give him the money then. He leaves to track the elf.
-Even Later-
Lerris and Rowen run into each other. It might have been literally, if Lerris was running, but I don’t remember. Given a chance to get a good look at each other, everything is fine. They are surprised, and Byron hangs off in the background. Lerris tells Rowen what happened, and they start walking. They start talking, catching up. Rowen asks Lerris if he was ever reacquainted with his family. He says he feels that that’s in the past now, and he wants to look more to the future. She’s satisfied with that answer, and asks what he’s been up to. Lerris says he’s been working on a book about Byron, tells her not to tell him yet.
They go on for a long time, and then, the Assassin reveals himself. They fight. Lerris taunts the Assassin about death, and Rowen is stunned about it, because it’s not like him. Byron, meanwhile, is useless, and doesn’t fight. Rowen and Lerris take a beating. I cannot remember when Lerris breaks his staff--it was either here or later, with Aouri. When the Assassin is at a low point, Lerris plays the voice of reason, proclaims the fight useless, and offers his staff so the Assassin can pretend Lerris has died. The Assassin decides that’s not nearly as fun as killing, and goes on fighting. They fight, knock the Assassin out, and Lerris leaves behind his staff so the Assassin will get his money, and otherwise not follow.
They leave. Aouri comes in, and tracks down the surviving Assassin. They talk. Aouri tells Vyrax that he was the backing if Vyrax didn’t do the job. Aouri kills Vyrax and takes the staff, and goes off to find Lerris.
Rowen and Lerris have no idea. They nurse their wounds/move on. From the back, Byron sees that they’re holding hands. He makes a decision. He leaves, not ever intending to come back.
Lerris and Rowen don’t notice for a long time. They enter a clearing, or leave the forest, one of the two by nightfall. They notice he’s gone. Rowen goes into a panic, tries to find him, but it’s too dark. Lerris assures her they will find him in the morning, when there is more light. Tells her something like, if she wants to, they won’t ever stop looking. She’s contented for the moment, and start a fire and they go to sleep.
Somewhere way away, Byron is dreaming. He dreams that he’s walking down the path with Rowen and Lerris, and that he stabs her in the back with a black-handled knife.
Morning comes, and Lerris wakes first, and cooks some meat he brought along, serving it on a large leave. They eat together, Rowen is very pensive, and Lerris is talking to her. He’s privately wondering about Rowen and Byron, knowing it was Rowen’s decision to find Byron if she wanted to. He thinks it, but he doesn’t ask, because it’s not his decision to make. They talk about how she trained him. He says something to the effect of her being a hard teacher.
She goes very pensive, then says that he won’t have to worry about that anymore. He hugs her, and tells her that Byron would approve of her decision. They get moving again, without a real destination.
Give it some time, and Lerris’ staff comes flying out of nowhere and ends up in front of them.
Enter fight scene 2. Aouri is stronger, focuses more on Lerris, deeming Rowen weak because of femininity. He tells her she’s weak, at some point, I recall. This could also be where Lerris breaks his staff. Rowen asks the infamous ‘break anything?’ when Lerris hits a tree (if this is, indeed, where the staff breaks, and he considers her words a pun). Fight goes on, and I believe Aouri is wounded. He decides to live to fight another day, and runs Rowen completely through. Aouri leaves. Lerris scrambles to help her, book papers flying out of his bag as he gets bandages. He carries her for about an hour, and finds a little farm. He steals Paynim that way--there was a plaque there telling the name. He rides to Rivendell, and Rowen wakes up in a bed at the infirmary there.
Lerris is there, tells her what happened. He says, or perhaps remembers that the nurses had to wrestle him out of her room while they worked, five or six days before. She’s still in pain, but out of pride, doesn’t show it. He, almost jokingly, asks her to prove it, showing her a basket of fruit on the other side of the room, and telling her to walk to it. She’s hungry, and not happy he’s testing her. She tries to walk, and ends up falling. He carries her back to the bed, and gives her fruit anyway. He gives her the ‘help’ talk, telling her about the first time she asked his help, with Byron at the end of a sword. He’s tired, having not slept for a long time. He gets on her bed, she jokes about his shoes. He tries to go to sleep, and the matron comes in and orders him out. When he doesn’t comply, she grabs his sides. He jumps up, complies. Asks the matron if the next room is taken. She says no, and he says ‘it is now’, and goes there to sleep. The matron tells Rowen, kindly, to sleep. She does. Apple falls.
Next day. Lerris wakes up. He decides against checking on Rowen, she’s probably still asleep. He explores the place, has himself a new staff made. He takes it, starts practicing with it in the city, doesn’t have a shirt on. He’s sweating, and young girls and many others are staring at him. He feels very uncomfortable.
-Meanwhile-
Rowen wakes up. She wants to be able to walk, wants to prove she can. She gets up, with difficulty, and falls to her knees, very red, by the end of the bedpost.
-Then-
Lerris wants to see Rowen. He comes in, finds her, and laughs. He picked her up and put her in bed. He asked if if there was anything she wanted. She asked for water. They talk for just a bit, and he goes off, and she goes back to sleep. In the morning, Lerris is looking up to the sky from the footsteps of the hospital. Rowen wakes, and she tries to walk again. This time, she succeeds. She’s still weak, though. She goes outside, and finds Lerris. She leans over his view. He smiles and makes a comment about his view being blocked, and then he retracts it, saying the likes the new one too. He gets up, and they hold hands as they walk down. He knows she’s leaning on him for support, but he doesn’t say anything about it, feeling it’s her decision. He tells her that he had seen some elves there, and they asked him how Abbot was. He tells her he lied through his teeth. He also tells her that he was practicing with his staff, and that everyone came to stare at him for it. Says he hated it. He wants to go someplace quiet, knows she would too, being a thief. He suggests Aryan. She likes the idea. Lerris introduces Rowen to his new horse, and tells her how right it feels when he’s riding him. They leave.
They ride of a long time, sleep sometimes, etc. There’s a lot of open field in front of them. They can see the city from where they are.
Enter fight scene. Aouri attacks, plays on Rowen’s weakness, then goes for Lerris. He has the upper hand. He beats both of them down, disarms Lerris, and comes over his fallen body for the finishing blow. Rowen comes up from behind and breaks the staff over Aouri’s head. Rowen and Lerris, all covered in bruises, head the rest of the way to Aryan. People give them odd looks because of their bruises.
Lerris makes a bunch of plans about finding food and a place to stay. Rowen reminds him he has no money. He’s crestfallen for a little while, but then gets and idea. He and she get off the horse, and he offers the horse to a stable boy, but the boy doesn’t really know anything about anything. He tells the stable boy to get his master, and out comes Ty. Lerris explains the horse and their situation, and gives him money and offers a room in the Inn for them to stay at, in return for work. They are apparently extending the Inn and need someone to help build. They go inside, and Lerris asks for two of the largest dishes available. It comes, and he digs in. He tells Rowen his proverb “Those who look to the Heavens prosper, those who defy it are no more,” and rationalizes it by saying how he did not fight and already got a job and a place to stay. Rowen contradicts it with a saying of her own.
Meanwhile, Byron is way away in Gondor. He spot a very nice looking knife and barters for it. He loves it, but then gets a wave of emotion, like he’s left Rowen and Lerris to die by Aouri.
