I was pretty sure I had a thread like this up already, but on realizing I don't, here it is. Here we discuss what we eventually want our world to look like. THOTW covers the most ground, so as I edit that, I may actually draw something for you.
List of Placenames (feel free to add on as desired) Nettethany (that one came in a dream) Araen (broken streetsign that meant Arden. Hm. Arden could be something too, come to think of it) Salthinier (strange message board censor system) Mehow (typo) Avaen Araev Avaev Aveev Tisdale (name that sounds like place) Orderra (sister said "order a", and it came out as a single word)
List of Placenames (ME) With Application (Clearly tentative, add suggestions as desired) Middle Earth (Lerris & I were thinking Nettethany) Mirkwood (Lerris suggested Kegluneq Wood, Kegluneq Yupik-Eskimo for "Wolf", literally meaning "Wolf Wood". We also like älvawood) Rohan (Araen or Mehow) Gondor (Salthinier, Aveev, or Orderra) Rivendell [Avaen, Araev, Avaev, Aureat (golden), or Tisdale] Aryan (Tisdale, Arden, or Araen) Mordor (Orderra) River Isen (Salthinier) Laketown (Tisdale)
Other Locations Zyroxi
Suggestions Not to completely negate Lerris' suggestion about Mirkwood, but just to throw it out there, it might be interesting to name the wood that Rowen was born in Kegluneq, since we know there was a real wolf infestation there, and it would make sense, sort of. Throwing it out there, nothing is set in stone.
Politics Partially available on other parts of the board, transferring soon
Gondor Ditto
Rohan Ditto

I'm adding the name Anthophyta to the list (pronounced anthau--fit--ah) because it's a pretty word. It means flowerering plant, and actually used to be a scientific term for flowers.
Maybe we want to name the whole world Anthophyta? Or something else? Any thoughts?

Tisdale? Really? I am not naming a city in this mythology, who my supremely evil character is from, after a High School Musical star. Not happening.
I don't think the modern linguistics have place in a mythological world. If we are going to fully develop this world (I also like Nettethany) then we should use made up linguistics. Ie, Ithilion, Grohn's sword, would no longer be Ithilion, but something else meaning moon-somethingorother. I forget what ion meant....
Anyway...yeah. Lots of "A" names. Let's get some variety. But I'm not good at coming up with names.

Kyle and I were thinking of picking a language, such as Norwegian and Norse, and adapting it for the purpose of the story. That's where Alvawood comes from. I see your point, but the different cultures will have different sounding names. Most of these for now are really adapted typos, some of which turned out sounding rather well. (Anyway, I mostly like the sound of a Dale, which is commonly incorporated into locations, but Laketown is up to you. I was just offering suggestions).
Also, although I really like Anthophyta, for the most part, I would like to stay away from directly adapting Latin or Greek, just because it's so used. Not that we can't, but I would avoid it.

To make Rohan a little different, it might be interesting to treat them as if they were a race of american indians. Just a thought.
We could also possibly call the world "Terra" or "Terre", for earth. It's familiar enough that readers would immediately key in to what we were talking about. Currently looking up alternatives.
To reiterate, we were looking at the Norse and Norwegian languages from which to base elvish. Norwegian words for "Earth" include Jorden, Jorda, and Jordi. The Norse word is (wait for it) Midgard, AKA Middle Earth (I'm guessing that's a no-go). Theoretically, though, any of the above (from Jorden down) with modification could be used as a word for the elf continent.

"Jorda," sounds like a good name for a planet if you ask me.
